Goosebumps and Filter Coffee: Finding Inspiration in Chennai

A trip back to India, a family reunion in Chennai, and finding the raw, unspoken tension that fuels my next novel.

I have been quiet on the journal for the last month, and for a good reason. I traded the frozen silence of Montreal for the electric humidity of India. It was a month of reconnecting with my roots, but the most profound moments came during a visit to Chennai to meet a dear friend.

This wasn't just a simple catch-up. As I shared in a previous post, we got back in touch after she read my first book, and hearing about her personal life completely blew my mind. I was so inspired by her journey that I kept pursuing her to share more details. After a lot of heartfelt conversations, I finally convinced her to let me base my second book entirely on her story. It was a lovely family get-together, but meeting her felt entirely different this time. What surprised me the most was the absolute transition in her. I still remember how intensely shy and reserved she used to be in our childhood. Seeing her now, so clear, confident, and unapologetic about trying new things in her private life, completely shifted the air between us.

I also had the chance to meet her husband. While he knows I am writing a book inspired by their personal life, we were incredibly careful to keep the actual details completely out of the conversation when he was in the room. We stuck to polite, surface-level talk, sharing a quick, silent glance whenever the topic edged dangerously close to her hidden reality. Openly discussing the raw, unfiltered dynamics of their most unconventional, intimate choices in front of him felt like walking on glass. Some conversations simply demand the sanctuary of a locked door.

But what I will never forget is the exact moment we finally met in person after so many years. The second our eyes locked, I caught a sudden, nervous flush on her cheeks. There was a beautiful, vulnerable shyness there, born from the fact that I now knew the deepest, most intimate corners of her private life. But just as quickly, it melted into a naughty, knowing smile. That completely unfiltered shift in her expression literally gave me goosebumps. It is exactly that kind of high-voltage, unspoken energy I strive to capture in my writing.

During my stay, I visited the hospital where she works and walked through her surrounding neighborhoods, absorbing the sights, sounds, and heat of Chennai. I needed to anchor my fictional world in the absolute reality of her daily life.

"True inspiration doesn't come from imagining a perfect character. It comes from observing the raw, unfiltered moments of real people who refuse to hide their desires."

I am back now, my notebooks full and my imagination thrumming. I have gathered enough material, and I am putting everything into this new manuscript. My goal is to publish this second book by the end of July.

While we wait for this next chapter, you can explore the passion that started it all. If you haven't yet, step into the world of my debut novel, The Approved Affair, and tell me what you think.
